The West Side of Lewis is largely rural and so places to eat out in the local area are relatively rare, but not quite as rare as you might think.
Between Barvas and Ness lies Borve where there is a hotel which does good evening meals with huge portions.
In the nearby village of Bragar "40 North" provides a takeaway service and always has a range of interesting items on the vast menu along with freshly baked pizza and also Indian food which is provided cold so that you can heat it up at home. Dollag's Cottage has a microwave oven ideally suited for this task.
The owners of 40 North have now added a "sit in" restaurant called "The Verandah" which opened over the New Year period, as a sort of test run, and then had its official opening on 17th January 2017. Having had the pleasure of attending one of the "test" evenings it is great to report that the food maintains the same high standard of the 40 North takeaway service and there would be no hesitation in suggesting an evening at The Verandah though booking well in advance is likely to be necessary.
A dinner, or two, from "40 North" has become one of the "must do" activities for many returning visitors to the cottage and it is recommended that you set aside an evening for a "40 North" treat. You can check out the menu, and the new Verandah resaurant, on the web site:
In the town of Stornoway there are a wide range of places to eat ranging from take away fish and chips, Indian and Chinese to local hotels and restaurants with interesting and inventive menus. "Digby Chick" in the centre of town is always very highly rated and the visitor can have an excellent meal at a very reasonable price though it is often busy and so booking may be necessary. The Cabarfeidh Hotel located in Stornoway at the first roundabout as you come in from Barvas also does very good meals in its Solas Restaurant.
